FORESTRY: More Equipment … Fewer Workers. The process began a long time ago.

From the Article “Historic St. Croix Sees Last Log Drive”

“With the advent of roads in the forests and woods it was seen that one truck could do the work of, say, a hundred men in less time than it takes to bat an eye; so trucks were used to take the Iogs to the river. Then along came construction of secondary roads which along with the access roads provided a rural network of good roads and it was found simply more economic to take logs .direct to the mills instead of waiting for the whims of the weatherman to thaw out frozen rivers. Large logging crews spending long periods at camp were therefore found unnecessary.”
