I was click, click, clicking my way through Google search looking for something that would help folks understand the potential problems affecting herring in Nova Scotia and chanced upon this power point. I’ve condensed it down to diseases, parasites and toxins that we humans can get into our systems from a variety of common seafood, including herring and other fish.
It makes interesting reading and it is immediately apparent why the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is so important to Canadians and countries receiving our exported seafoods. I can’t speak for every CFIA lab, but I do have some indirect experience with two operations and from what I have seen, they take their jobs very, very seriously. In fact I think we are lucky to have this organization working on our behalf. You can check them out at http://www.inspection.gc.ca/eng/1297964599443/1297965645317. They offer an email service where they will inform you about the latest concerns and recalls. It’s well worth subscribing to.
I have edited the following presentation down to items only related to seafood. Thanks to Sharyl Long
Enjoy and eat well! 😉
