Subject: Gray Jays

Today I stumbled upon two Grey Jays while skiing near highway 1 and the Frye Road which is between Saint Stephen and Saint Andrews. These birds were feeding on several pounds of raw chicken that somebody discarded by the roadside in mesh bags. I would expect these birds to continue feeding on this free meal for quite awhile if coyotes do not carry it off. To make it easier for others to observe these birds I hung one of the bags in a tree.

If anybody wishes to see these uncommon residents turn off highway #1 onto the Frye Road and proceed to small pullout after what I guess is a couple hundred meters. You might notice signs of snowmobile traffic at this pullout. There are three red bags of chicken here, two on the ground and the one hanging low in a tree next to the road.

Evening Grosbeaks and Common Redpolls continue to be irregular feeder birds at my home on Kerr’s Ridge.
